Communication in a relationship: Thanksgiving, Asking, Listening, Knowing

31 But he spoke more vehemently, "If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" 32 He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33 He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed 34 He said to them, [A]"My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch." 35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him 36 [B] "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; [C] nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will"
37 Then He came and found them sleeping, "Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." 39Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 41 Then He came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, [D] let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand."
Lk 22:54 Peter denied Him "Woman, I do not know Him." 23:34  Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do"

I. Pray

Pour Out your feelings honestly to God   1Pt 5:7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Phil 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus

Recognize that God is able to change anything Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  Jn 15:7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you

Align your Will (thinking and feeling) with the Father's  1Jn 5:14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

Yield yourself to do God's will to the point of death. Rm 14:4 God is able to make him stand. 2Cor 9:8 God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.

What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield you; you will find a solace there.
Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised Thou wilt all our burdens bear
May we ever, Lord, be bringing all to Thee in earnest prayer J Scriven 1855

Sweet hour of prayer! That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief, My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare, By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless. And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace, I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer! -Blind Wm Walford 1845

Heb 4:15 tempted 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

See outline on “Can God Meet Emotional Needs?” in TOYL book and on Truthbase.net

  1. If God knows what we need before we ask it, why ask? Doesn't He also know what's best? How do we respond when God says No?
  2. What's the difference between persisting in prayer and pestering God? Lk 18 Why did Jesus and Paul only pray three times for their desires?
  3. What's our natural response to impending doom and difficulties? Why do you think God allows them in our lives? Where does faith fit?
  4. How is God glorified by most of our prayers? Into which stage to most of our prayers fall? How can you get to the higher levels?
  5. How could you cultivate and deepen your relationship with God? What would prevent that from happening? Can you expect God's help?
