II. There is a Difference between God forgiving us (justification by faith) and us being cleansed from our sin and its effects (sanctification)

A. OT Clean  Lev 14:7 he shall sprinkle it 7 times on him  8 He who is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and wash...
Num 19:9 ashes 12 He shall purify himself 13 not purify himself, defiles..cut off ...unclean..not sprinkled on him; his uncleanness is still on him.Ps 51:9-19

B. NT Clean 1Jn 1:7 If  we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin 9  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Titus 2:14 gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed & purify for Himself a people, zealous for good works
Phil 2:12 work out/produce your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will & to do for His good pleasure

1. Conscience 1Tim 1:5 goal of the charge is love out of a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, 3:9 hold truth w/ pure C.
2Tim 1:3 serve w/ a pure conscience, as my forefathers did Ti 1:15 defiled & unfaithful nothing is pure; their mind and conscience have become defiled

7.. Flee & Follow  2Tim  2:22  Flee lusts; but pursue R, faith, love, peace w/ those call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

8. Walk by HS Rm 8:12  brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live acc to the flesh. 13 For if you live acc to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

III. NT Believers participate in the Forgiveness (Justification by faith) and Spirit (Sanctification by “confession”) aspects of the New Covenant

Mt 26:28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission/forgiveness of sins. 2Cor 3:6 Ministers of NC

OT New Covenant  Ezk 36:24  I will take you from among the nations... and bring you into your own land. 25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you Isa 63:11 and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. 28 Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God 31 then you will remember and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and abominations...   cf Ex 24:3-8 "All that the LORD has said we will do, and be obedient."

NT Participation Acts (1:8) 2:16...prophet Joel 17 'in the last days, says God,  I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy... 38  Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins;  you shall receive the gift of the HS. 5:2 witnesses...the HS whom God has given to those who obey Him."  Eph 4:30 Grieve HS  1Thess 5:2+ Quench HS
Acts 7:51 "You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.
Acts (8:14) 10:42 He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. 43 To Him all the prophets witness that, thru His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins." 44 While Peter was still speaking, the HS fell upon all those who heard the word. 47...received the HS just as we have?

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:
1. As a justified believer in Christ, what is your hope? How are you “working out your salvation”? How are you purifying yourself?
2. Why is confession important? If we don't acknowledge the wrong thinking behind our actions, how can we purify our spirit and heart?
3. Are you on track to win the race or to be disqualified from the prize? Is your holiness, purity, love, and service pleasing to God?
