I. Woe is sorrow, grief, anger or regret over the Judgment God brings on those who don't respond correctly to Him in faithful obedience

II. Self-inflicted Woe Pr 23:29  Who has woe? sorrow? contentions? complaints? wounds/bruises? redness of eyes?  (consequence of addiction to escapism/comfort)

A. Not respond to God's authenticating HS Mt 11:21 Woe to Bethesda! mighty works ...repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

B. Mt 23:31 you are witnesses against yourselves 37 wanted to gather...but you were not willing! 38 Your house is left to you desolate;

III. MT 23 Warnings and Woes to un-receptive believing fools and hypocrites who know the law but don't wisely obey/respond to it

A. 1-3 Do practice what Moses preaches-enable others do the same 5-12 serve/do works for glory from God; no Father/Rabbi groupies

B. 13 Don't be a hypocrite or cause others to stumble shut up the kingdom of heaven; not allow those who are entering to go in.

14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! devour widows' houses, pretense prayers...receive greater condemnation.

15 Convert to cause vs Christ travel to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him 2x as much a son of hell as yourselves.

16-22 Secular materialists value gold over God and temple

23 Major on minors neglected weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy/hesed and faithfulness...ought do w/o the others undone

24-28 Blind Defiled and Defiling Pious Hypocrites 25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! cleanse outside...inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. 27 whitewashed tombs...inside all uncleanness. 28 inside full of hypocrisy and lawlessness

29-36 Woe...adorn tombs prophets 33 Serpents, brood of vipers! How escape the condemnation of Gehenna? 34 send you prophets, wise men...

III. Not seek God's will or counsel due to not knowing nor valuing God and His values (by which we'll inevitably be judged)

A. Wrong (perverted satanic) values Isa 5:11 Woe to them that rise up early in the morning...wine inflame them!  20  Woe to them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

B. Politicians Isa 10:1  Woe to them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;

C. Silly sneaks Isa 29:15  Woe...hide their counsel from LORD, and their works in the dark, say, Who sees us? and who knows us?

D. Not seek God's will Isa 30:1 Woe rebellious children...carry out plans but not mine...alliances...not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin NIV

E. Not seek God's protection Isa 31:1 Woe...go to Egypt for help; trust in chariots...look not to Holy One of Israel nor seek the LORD!

F. Not truly honor God Hos 7:13  Woe..fled from me: destruction to them! transgressed cx me: tho I  redeemed them, yet spoken lies cx Me.

G. Lk 6:24 w\Woe to you who are rich, for you  separated your consolation 25 Woe to you who are full, for you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep 26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for so did their fathers to the false prophets

IV. Consequences of bad values Isa 3:9 The look on their face witnesses cx them, they declare their sin as Sodom; not hide it. Woe to their soul! They have brought evil upon themselves 10 Say to righteous it shall be well w/ them...eat fruit of their doings.11 Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, the reward of his hands shall be given him. 12 Those who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths."

Trust in bad leaders, thus need to study/understand Bible for oneself  Jer 23:1 Woe to pastors that destroy & scatter the sheep of my pasture!

Eze 13:3 Woe to foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit & have seen nothing! 34:2 prophesy cx the shepherds of Israel...Woe to shepherds that feed themselves vs flocks  Zec 11:17 Woe to the worthless shepherd that abandons the flock! Arm withered, eye utterly darkened

V. Good Woe-Godly Sorrow “produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death” 2Cor 7:9

Isa 5:4 What more could have been done to My vineyard that I have not done? When I expected it to yield good grapes found only bad?

8 Woe to those...who add field to field...shall be desolate, 10 For ten acres of vineyard shall yield six gallons, ten bushels of seed shall yield a bushel

11 Woe to those who rise early morning...inflames them 12 But they do not regard the work of the LORD, nor consider the operation of His hands.

13 Therefore my people have gone into captivity because they have no knowledge; 15 People shall be brought down, humbled, lofty shall be humbled.

16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in/by judgment, and God who is holy shall be hallowed in/by righteousness.

21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and clever in their own sight! 23 acquit guilty for a bribe, take away justice from the righteous man!

24 fire grass,,root will decay, flowers dust because they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

25  Therefore the anger of the LORD is aroused against His people; For all this His anger is not turned away, But His hand is stretched out still.

Isa 6:5 Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. 7 live coal has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged."

8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: " Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me."

9 And He said, "Go, and tell this people:'Keep on hearing, but do not understand; Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.' 10 Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and return and be healed."

Fulfill ministry 1Cor 9:16...preach nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. What can we learn from God giving His greatest condemnation/judgment for those who are His chosen people?  Lk 12:48

2. What would cause those enjoying God's benefits to not seek, value, appreciate, trust and trust Him in their daily lives?

3. What do you think is going on in the minds of those who pervert God's values, openly defy/disobey Him and parade their sin?

4. Do people depart from God due to bad shepherds or do they have them because they departed? Jer 3:12-15
