Jude 7  Wrath on Sodom and Selfish “Saints”

©2019 WF Cobb Truthbase.net    DailyTruthbase.blogspot

7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance/judgment of eternal of the Age fire.

I. God graciously brings judgment in increasing measure against those who rebel against His Truth (purpose and commands)

Gen 13:12 Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.

13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.   14:10 tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills. 11 The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. 12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

Gen 19:4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.” 6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.” 9 “Get out of our way,This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door. 10 But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they wearied themselves to find the door. 12 The two men said to Lot: Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,13 because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.

Lev 18:11 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. (Judges 19:22)  1Cor 6:9=men in bed

II. The Spirit of Sodom is Self centeredness that is only concerned with one's temporal desires/lusts, without concern for God's will or effect/benefit on others

Eze 16:35 you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord! 36 you poured out your lust...'cse of all your detestable idols, and 'cse you gave them your children’s blood,  43 Did you not add lewdness to all your other detestable practices? 49 Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me. \51 your sins were more vile than theirs, they appear more righteous than you. So then, be ashamed and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous. 53 But  I will restore the fortunes of Sodom...58 You will bear the consequences of your lewdness and your detestable practices, declares the Lord

III. God's people who live for their will/desires/lusts rather than God's will face both temporal and eternal (of The Age) judgment

Isa 3:9 they parade  their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded/brought evil upon themselves.

Jer 23:13...led my people astray 14 They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that not one of them turns from their wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; 15 'cse of the prophets of Jerusalem  ungodliness has spread thru the land 16 Lord Almighty says: “Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord 17 keep saying to those who despise me: Lord says you will have peace.’To all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts they say, ‘No harm will come to you.’

Rm 1:18 wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold/suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 'cse what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.20///clearly seen...understood w/o excuse, 21 tho they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thots, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,23 and changed the glory 24 God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator 26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, 28 not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, malice; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such  things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

IV. Believers escape the wrath of God cx those who ignore the Truth by putting to death deadly desires/acts and being transformed Rm 12

1Pt 2:11 I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, Lust blinds to reality we pursue our desires

1Th 4:3 will of God is your sanctification: abstain from sexual immorality 5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;

1Cor 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 1Tim 1:10  nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 such were some of you: but you are washed, sanctified, justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Gal 5:19 works of the flesh: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, wanton caprice, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like...do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Col 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 'cse of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.  Cf Rm 8:14 by HS kill deeds of flesh=life

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. Why does God compare the sins of His people in both OT/NT with those of Sodom? Why does Jude use the example of Sodom?

2. How do you change your desires and values and put to death the deeds of the flesh (temporal desires)? What if you don't kill them?
