I. True Joy coexists with sorrow and deprivation.

Joy is an enduring expectation of optimism that all will be well, and at the moment couldn't be any better. Joy is sustainable and not subject to the law of diminishing returns Rejoicing is the expression of joy
Heb 12:2 who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame 2Cor 6:10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;
Acts 5:41 rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. Js 1:2 count it all joy when you fall into various trials
"Joy can be real only if people look upon their life as a service, and have a definite object in life outside themselves and their personal happiness" Tolstoy
"This is the true joy of life, the being used up for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one."-G Bernard Shaw
"Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give" Eleanor Roosevelt

II. False Joy is a temporary feeling of well-being resulting from a temporal (worldly) value system

Job 20:5 the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment Pr 15:21 Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom. See Joy Stealers

III. Joy is realized in the Presence of God who is found through obedience.

Lk 24:52 worshiped him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy

Ps 16:11 You will show me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Ps 15:1 LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? 2 He that walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart. 3 that backbites not with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor. 4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honors them that fear the LORD. Swears to his own hurt and changes not
Ecc 2:26 God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God
Jn 14:21 has my commands, obeys them...loves me: he that loves me shall be loved of my Father & I will love him, and will manifest myself to him
Js 4:4 adulterers...friendship of the world is enmity with God? be a friend of the world be enemy of God. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

IV. Joy is a Fruit of the Spirit produced just like those of the flesh. Joy is not a feeling, nor is faithfulness or self-control

Spirit of God uses the Word of God to produce in us the Mind (and actions) of Christ (set of mind, born of spiritual vs carnal values)

Gal 5:6 faith working thru love 13 liberty...don't indulge flesh...thru love serve one another 14 (love fulfills law) 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you desire. 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious... immorality … hatred...anger...jealousy...those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy...24 Those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.

Jesus is concerned with our Joy and has told us how to get it Jn 15:7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you...8 Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; so shall you be my disciples. 10 If you keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love...11 These things have I spoken to you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. 12 my commandment: love one another, as I have loved you
Sourced in the HS Romans 14:17 the kingdom of God is not food and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

  1.  How does joy differ from happiness? Is joy a feeling, an emotion, or what? Can emotions be commanded? Should joy be continual?
  2.
  3. Is there anything wrong w/ having your joy dependent upon anything temporal or external? How do being praised and giving relate to joy?
  4.
  5. Why doesn't joy come automatically? Where do most people trip on the path to joy? What’s the corrective?
  6.
  7. What are some of the “bests” you need to choose? What steps will you take to boost your joy level?
Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4
  8.

VI. Joy Stealers (courtesy of SH)

1. False Salvation - Seeking joy without the Holy Spirit; pursuing righteous activity without being in Christ = frustration.
2. The influence of Satan and demons.
3. The need to understand God’s sovereignty better - Fretting as if God were not in control, feeling the need for you to control your life (orchestrating all yourself), or feel that others control your life.
4. Not praying (enough) -Failing to commit to the Lord your life, your concerns; depending on human insight and staying away from divine insight.
5. Low after spiritual high - Going from a great spiritual experience (sermon, music, answered prayer) to trial in life.
6. Circumstance Orientation - Taking all signals from the material world; emotions controlled by the world’s shallowness. Having what you want, being treated as you want, living as you want, big events, new things, vacations...and if you don’t or aren’t, you’re miserable.
7. Ingratitude- (i.e. Be grateful) Need to focus on things received from God, be satisfied, see trials as opportunities from God.
8. Forgetfulness - Remember what you are saved from. (New babes in Christ don’t usually cause splits in churches, they are too grateful and joyful about what they’ve received.)
9. Dissatisfaction- With you earthly condition, (looks, living situation, place in life, feeling short-changed, job).
10. Fear of the Future- Imagine the worst to happen—failure, loss, illness, death, things aren’t happening (the way you want them to.)
11. Live by Uncontrolled Feelings - “A weak person doesn’t talk to themselves enough.” Control yourself—thoughts, behavior...
12. Morbid Self-Analysis - Psychology may get in the way considering scripture is all that is really needed to give guidelines for life, it makes us self-centered, always looking to be set free but just really dredging up sins we’ve committed. We are inadequate, yes. Accept it and get God’s help as it was offered. Finding out all the “whys” won’t always help.
13. Guilt- Unwillingness to accept forgiveness, “I just can’t forgive myself” even though God has; always going back to that “one thing” you just can’t let go of.

Joy - Part 2
