Jewish Roots of the Resurrection Pt 2 Early Church

I. Real repentance requires an acute perception of reality (sin and its consequences), mind and emotion change, and return to God

Acts 2:11 works of God 14 Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice said to them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the 3rd hour of the day.

16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel           (2:1 Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; for the day of the LORD is coming, for it is at hand: 2 A day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, like the morning clouds spread over the mountains. a people come, great and strong, the like of whom has never been; nor will there ever be any such after them 3  A fire devours before them..the land is like the Garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; surely nothing shall escape them...  11 The LORD gives voice before His army, for His camp is very great; for strong is the One who executes His word. for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; Who can endure it?

12 "Now, therefore" says LORD, "Return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning" =Genuine sorrow

13 So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great hesed; and He relents from doing harm. 14 Who knows if He will return and relent, and leave a blessing behind Him?)

Mt 21:31...enter the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; and when you saw it, you did not afterward repent/regret and believe him

Js 4:6 “gives grace to the humble” 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

II. Those who repent and call upon/trust the Messiah are saved from their sins and share in the blessings of His kingdom

Acts 2:17 (Joel 2:17) 'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy. (19 I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.) 21 it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of LORD shall be saved.”

(Joel: in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, as LORD has said, among the remnant whom the LORD calls/summons)

Acts 2:32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Thus being exalted to the right hand of God, and received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. 34 "For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: (Ps 110) The LORD said to my Lord, " Sit at My right hand, 35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool."

[cf Ps 45:6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than/above Your companions.         Heb 2:10 sons to glory

Cf Heb 1:3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high

6 But (again) when He brings the firstborn into the world, He says: "Let all the angels of God worship Him."  Ps 97:7 LXX

8 But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.  9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness above Your companions." 13 But to which of the angels has He ever said: "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool"?]

Acts 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" 38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for/eis the remission/forgiveness of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call/invite."  HS convinces of sin/righteousness/judgment & guides in Truth Jn 16:8,13

III. Believers are saved (justified/sanctified/glorified) as they remain receptive to the Holy Spirit of Truth and the Body of Christ Eph 4

Acts 2:40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation."

41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine/teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done thru the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. 2Thess 3:10

46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

Heb 10:24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke/stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see The Day approaching.

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. Why do some believe and are saved, and others doubt or scoff, and remain in their sins? Do people believer they've sinned/are sinners?

2. If believers have forgiveness of sins by faith, why do they still need to be saved from their generation obey God's Holy Spirit of Truth?
