As long as you cultivate a desire for sin (independently seeking power, pleasure and possessions), it will grow and bear fruit

Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things comes the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience.

I. Deceived by Demons, Dumbness and/or Desire

Satan & His system Eph 2:2...in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the sons of disobedience 3 Among whom also we all had our manner of life in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were naturally the sons of wrath, even as others.

1Ti 2:14 the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

Teachers 2Pt 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Ourselves Eph 4:22 put off concerning the former manner of life the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Jer 29:8 Let not your prophets & diviners...deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

II. Where we are warned against being deceived

Consequences Ga 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that sows to his flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Pleasure 1Co 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind...Eph 5:5; Gal 5:21

Day of the Lord 2Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come the departure first

Mt 24:4 And Jesus answered and said to them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 24 false Christs will arise, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders...they would deceive the very elect

Ritual Profiting Jas 1:26 seems to be religious, & bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain

Friends 1Co 15:33 Be not deceived: evil company corrupts good habits. 34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not...not knowledge...

Body Building Eph 4:14 no more children tossed... dice playing of men, cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive;

1Jo 3:6 Whoever abideth in him sinneth not: whoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

III. Symptoms of being Ripe for Wrath (deceived or disobedient/unpersuaded)

Lack wisdom Lu 1:17 to turn the hearts...disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Not godly Ro 1:18 wrath of God is revealed against all ungodliness & unrighteousness...who hold the truth in unrighteousness

Unfruitful Mr 4:19 cares of this world, deceitfulness of riches, lusts of other things, choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Ti 1:16 profess they know God; in works they deny, being abominable, and disobedient, and to every good work disqualified

Ti 3:3 were foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts & pleasures, living in malice & envy, hateful, hating one another

Hardened slanderers Ac 19:9 hardened, and believed not, but spoke evil of that way before the multitude, he departed...

Independent Ro 1:30 Backbiters, disloyal to God, insolent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents

2Ti 3:2 men shall be lovers of themselves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy

Contentious Ro 2:8 to them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

Contrary Ro 10:21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.

Heb 3:18 And to whom did he swear that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

1Pe 2:8 stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, who stumble at the word, being disobedient: to this also they were appointed.

Heb 11:31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, after she had received the spies with peace.

1Pe 2:7 To you therefore who believe [he is] precious: but to them who are disobedient, the stone which the builders rejected, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, [even to them] who stumble at the word, being disobedient: to this also they were appointed.

IV. How to Prevent Deception

Take heed Mr 13:5 And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:

Be on guard Col 2:8 Beware lest any man lead you astray through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping...

Test by the Word 1Jn 4:1 believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets...

Jer 29:9 For they prophesy falsely to you in my name: I have not sent them, 31...I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie:

2Ti 3:12 live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and seducers...deceiving, and being deceived. 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing from whom thou hast learned [them];

Tit 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convict those who contradict.10 For there are many rebellious and vain talkers and deceivers, especially they of the circumcision:

Purify your Pleasures 2Th 2:10 with all deception of unrighteousness...for they received not the love of the truth...be saved. 11 for God send...delusion...believe a lie: 12 all may be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Col 3:5 Mortify...immorality, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things the wrath of God comes on the sons of disobedience 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing ye have put off old man with his deeds; 10 put on (Eph 2:22)

Real Fellowship Heb 3:13 exhort one another daily...lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Labor Heb 4:6 remains...enter...entered not because of unbelief 11 Let us labour to enter...lest any fall...unbelief

1Pe 3:1 Likewise, ye wives, [be] in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the behavior of the wives;

1Pe 3:20 Who at one time were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was preparing, in which few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

1Pe 4:17 For the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [beginneth] with us, what shall [be] the end of them that obey not the gospel of God?

2Pe 2:13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, [as] they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots [they are] and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;

Jn 3:36 believes on the Son has everlasting life: he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him

2Jo 1:6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. 7 For many deceivers have entered into the world, who confess not Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves, that you lose not those things which you have wrought, but that you receive a full reward.

Re 18:23 And the light of a lamp shall shine no more in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
