Clothed and in Your Right Mind

2005-02-13 Mark 5:1-20

Mk 5:1  Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. 2  And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3  who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, 4  because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. 5  And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting with stones.

I. Demonic Delusions and Realities

(Lausanne Paper “Deliver us from Evil www.gospelcom.net/lcwe/dufe/Papers/dufeeng.htm)

A. Those who deny a supernatural spirit world and demons aren’t taking account of all the facts (Truth=best explain all the facts)

1Pt 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

B. Satan’s will for your life is a shortcut to immediate gratification that causes us to miss out on temporal and eternal benefit (Eph 2)

1Jn 2:1 all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world.

C. We will always lose by ourselves, but will be safe and victorious as we abide in God and His will (John 15; Eph 6 corporate unity)

1John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Mk 5:6  When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. 7  And he cried out with a loud voice and said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me." 8  For He said to him, "Come out of the man, unclean spirit!" 9  Then He asked him, "What is your name?" And he answered, saying, "My name is Legion; for we are many." 10  Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. 11  Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12  So all the demons begged Him, saying, "Send us to the swine, that we may enter them." 13  And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.

II. Demonic Defense:  Submit (strongholds), Resist (lies with the truth) Draw (near) & Desist (dependent obedience)

James 4:6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." 7  Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.   Js 1:22  But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

A. Strongholds (areas where we struggle because we don’t want to obediently submit to God’s revelation) give Satan an open door:

Occult Cults/Religion Pride Independence/Rebellion Anger Drugs/Alcoholism  Pornography Food Music Addiction Idolatry Greed Fear

Eph 4: 26  "Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27  nor give place to the devil.  (1Sam 15:23)

B. Satan’s major weapons (Doubt about God fulfilling His promises; Discouragement over lack of success) are lies twisting the Truth

Mt 4:10 Jesus said to him, Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.

C. It’s never too late to start doing the right thing. We draw near by dependent prayer offered by submissive hearts (Thy will be done)

Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

D. Satan blinds people to the light of the gospel of glory. Understanding God’s plan to glorify Himself through glorifying us gives light.

2Co 4:4,6 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ…

Mk 5:14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. 15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 16 And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine. 17  Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region. 18  And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him.19  However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you." 20  And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.

III. Demonic Deliverance: Puts us in our right mind for God’s Glory not just our comfort

A. Incorrect Thinking will lead to incorrect values/feelings and repeated defeat and self damaging behavior  Romans 12:1-2

Gal 6:7  Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

B. Glorifying God, making Him look good in the eyes of others (now and in the future) is our purpose for being on earth

Mt 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

C. Witness to what you’ve seen and experienced Acts 1:8 receive power when the HS has come upon you- shall be witnesses to Me

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. Why do most people scoff at the idea of a spirit world and in particular of demonic influence of Christians?

2. Is it important to speak aloud in “rebuking Satan” or exposing his lies with the Truth? Why would someone resist the idea?

3. What weaknesses exist in your armor (Power, Pleasure, Possessions) that Satan could exploit? How can you protect yourself?

4. What are some characteristics of someone “in their right mind”? Are all believers there? How does one get to such a state?
