Theology Proper Study Guide: "What's God Like?"

Copyright 2/90 WF Cobb

I. PROCEDURE

Follow the same process outlined in the Bibliology Study Guide. Since the subject is obviously infinite, and you have a finite amount of time, the following suggestions might help.

Section II. below breaks down the major categories theologians talk about; unless you're talking with a cult member, you'll find a great deal of agreement about the nature of God. Read through the statements and make sure you understand the words or concepts (use an English dictionary for starters). If any of the statements don't fit your thoughts about God, search the Scriptures on the issue. Be able to make a case for the Trinity.

Section III. will be a lot more fun and profitable (even life-changing). This is a partial listing of verses where God reveals something about Himself that He expects us to act upon. Using the verses (and others) try to come up with a list of God's attributes and appropriate responses to His revelation of Himself. For extra credit try to get a sense of proportion of His revelation, e.g., How many verses in the Scripture indicate God is holy, just, loving, merciful; How many deal with His name-reputation-glory?  Define any terms using your Bible Study Methods. For instance, "HOLY" has of root meaning of separate or distinct from anything or anyone else.

II. DOCTRINE OF GOD (Theology Proper)

Nature

God is an absolute, infinite, self-existing, transcendent, corporate spirit being. (Ex 3:14; Ps 90:2; Gen 1:1, 26; Jn 4:24)

Attributes

God is everywhere, knows everything, can do anything He desires, unchangingly perfect, and infinitely good: holy, just, and loving.(Ps 139; Jer 32:27; Js 1:17; Mk 10:18; I Pt 1:16; Rm 2:6; I Jn 4:8)

Trinity

The one undivided, indivisible, uncompounded God eternally exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, having precisely the same nature and attributes, and worthy of the same worship and obedience. (Dt 6:4; Eph 1; Mt 28:19; Jn 6:27; Heb 1:8; Ac 5:3-4)

Creation

It is on the basis of God's work as Creator of man and earth that He has claim on man's allegiance and is sovereign ruler over all. (Gen 1:1,26; Rm 11:36; Ac 17:24; Col 1:16; Gen 1:2)

Sovereign Rule

God is in sovereign control of all history, working out His plan for ruling over men, so as to achieve maximum glory. (I Chr 29:11; Col 1:16; Rm 9:22-23; Heb 2:9; Eph 1:20-23)

Providence

God graciously rules over the world for our benefit and His glory. (Mt 5:45; 7:11; Ac 14:17; Rm 1:19-20; 8:28; Is 48:11)

III. Verses Revealing the Nature of God

GEN 6:7 So the Lord said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth--men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air--for I am grieved that I have made them."

GEN 15:1 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield,* your very great reward.+" + Or shield; / your reward will be very great

GEN 15:7 He also said to him, "I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."

GEN 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty*; walk before me and be blameless. * Hebrew El-Shaddai

GEN 26:24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham."

GEN 28:13 There above it* stood the Lord, and he said: "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. * Or There beside him

EXO 3:6 Then he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

EXO 3:14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am.* This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I am has sent me to you.'" * Or I will be what I will be

EXO 3:15 God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The Lord,* the God of your fathers--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob--has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation. * The Hebrew for Lord sounds like and may be derived from the Hebrew for I am in verse 14.

EXO 6:2 God also said to Moses, "I am the Lord.

EXO 6:6 "Therefore, say to the Israelites: 'I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.

EXO 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it."

EXO 10:2 that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord."

EXO 12:12 "On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn--both men and animals--and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.

EXO 15:11 "Who among the gods is like you, O Lord? Who is like you--majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?

EXO 15:26 He said, "If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you."

EXO 33:17 And the Lord said to Moses, "I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name." EXO 33:18 Then Moses said, "Now show me your glory." EXO 33:19 And the Lord said, "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. EXO 33:20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live."

EXO 34:1 The Lord said to Moses, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain; not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain." 4 So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands. 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation." 8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 10 Then the Lord said: "I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. EXO 34:11 Obey what I command you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

EXO 34:14 Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

EXO 34:32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.

LEV 11:44 I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves about on the ground. LEV 11:45 I am the Lord who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.

LEV 18:4 You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the Lord your God. LEV 18:5 Keep my decrees and laws, for the man who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord. DEU 5:4 The Lord spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain. 6 "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 7 "You shall have no other gods before* me. * Or besides 8 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 11 "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

DEU 5:22 These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

DEU 32:3 I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! DEU 32:4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. DEU 32:5 They have acted corruptly toward him; to their shame they are no longer his children, but a warped and crooked generation.* * Or Corrupt are they and not his children, / a generation warped and twisted to their shame DEU 32:6 Is this the way you repay the Lord, O foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator,* who made you and formed you? * Or Father, who bought you

DEU 32:16 They made him jealous with their foreign gods and angered him with their detestable idols. DEU 32:17 They sacrificed to demons, which are not God--gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your fathers did not fear. 18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth. DEU 32:19 The Lord saw this and rejected them because he was angered by his sons and daughters. DEU 32:20 "I will hide my face from them," he said, "and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation, children who are unfaithful. DEU 32:21 They made me jealous by what is no god and angered me with their worthless idols. I will make them envious by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding. DEU 32:22 For a fire has been kindled by my wrath, one that burns to the realm of death* below. It will devour the earth and its harvests and set afire the foundations of the mountains. * Hebrew to Sheol DEU 32:23 "I will heap calamities upon them and spend my arrows against them. DEU 32:24 I will send wasting famine against them, consuming pestilence and deadly plague; I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts, the venom of vipers that glide in the dust. DEU 32:25 In the street the sword will make them childless; in their homes terror will reign. Young men and young women will perish, infants and gray-haired men. DEU 32:26 I said I would scatter them and blot out their memory from mankind, DEU 32:27 but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy, lest the adversary misunderstand and say, 'Our hand has triumphed; the Lord has not done all this.'" DEU 32:28 They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment in them. DEU 32:29 If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be! DEU 32:30 How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the Lord had given them up? DEU 32:35 It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them." DEU 32:36 The Lord will judge his people and have compassion on his servants when he sees their strength is gone and no one is left, slave or free. DEU 32:39 "See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand. DEU 32:40 I lift my hand to heaven and declare: As surely as I live forever, DEU 32:41 when I sharpen my flashing sword and my hand grasps it in judgment, I will take vengeance on my adversaries and repay those who hate me. DEU 32:42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood, while my sword devours flesh: the blood of the slain and the captives, the heads of the enemy leaders." DEU 32:45 When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, DEU 32:46 he said to them, "Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law.

2CO 13:14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

1JO 4:8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

REV 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

REV 4:8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." REV 4:9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, REV 4:10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: REV 4:11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."

REV 15:3 and sang the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb: "Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. REV 15:4 Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed."

REV 22:20 He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
